What wattage should we specify for a shared kitchen?
800W as a minimum, 900W if the budget allows. Lower-powered units take noticeably longer, which becomes a queue at lunchtime.
Is a flatbed microwave worth the extra?
In shared or tenanted property, usually yes. There is no turntable to break or lose, rectangular dishes fit, and the cavity is quicker to clean.
Can a freestanding microwave go inside a cabinet?
Only if the manufacturer's ventilation clearances are met. Boxing a freestanding unit into a tight recess shortens its life. Where the look matters, specify a proper built-in model and housing.
Does a combi microwave replace an oven?
In a studio or annexe with no room for one, it comes close. In a property with a kitchen big enough for a built-in oven, it duplicates what you already have.
