Before you order a visor hood
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Wall unit | Measure the unit it fits beneath. No cabinetry work is needed. |
| Hood width | Match the hob width. Most of the range is 60cm. |
| Mounting height | Check the minimum height above the hob, which differs for gas and electric. |
| Venting | Ducted where there is a route outside; otherwise budget the carbon filters. |
| Handover | Tell tenants to pull the visor out. Pushed in, it barely extracts. |
Ducted versus recirculating, extract rates for new-build sign-off and who replaces the filters in a let are covered on the main cooker hoods page.
Frequently asked questions
Are visor hoods any good?
For what they are, yes. They extract less than a larger hood and look plain, but they are inexpensive, fit under an existing unit and are quick to replace, which is often what a rental kitchen needs.
Why does the tenant say it does not work?
Usually the visor has not been pulled out. That is the capture area, and pushed in the hood barely extracts.
Can it run without ducting?
Many can run recirculating with a carbon filter, which then needs replacing periodically. Ducted is better wherever there is a route outside.
