Before you order an island hood

Can we fit an island hood to any ceiling?
No. The ceiling has to carry the weight and there has to be a route for the ducting. On a concrete slab or in a conversion with no void it is often not possible.
How wide should an island hood be?
At least as wide as the hob, and wider if the space allows. Capture area matters more than on a wall-mounted hood.
What if the ceiling will not work?
A downdraft extractor rises out of the worktop and needs no ceiling fixing, though it takes space in the cabinet below.
