UPS sizing by load
Size on watts, not VA, and leave 20 to 30% headroom.
| Load | Typical UPS | Why | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tills, routers & a single PC | Tower, around 700–1000VA | Rides through blips and short cuts | View range |
| Small server or NAS | Tower or rack, 1500VA | Time to shut down cleanly | View range |
| Comms cabinet: switches, firewall, NAS | Rackmount, 2200–3000VA | Keeps the network up through short outages | View range |
| Longer runtime | UPS plus external battery pack | Adds runtime without a bigger UPS | View range |
Frequently asked questions
VA or watts?
Both appear on a UPS. Watts is the real power it can supply, and it's the number to size against. Add up the watts of everything connected and choose a UPS rated comfortably above it.
How long will it run?
It depends on the load. Check the runtime chart on the listing. At half load, a typical 1500VA UPS might run for 10 to 20 minutes, which is enough for a clean shutdown rather than all-day running.
Line-interactive or online?
Line-interactive units suit most offices and comms rooms. Online (double-conversion) units give the cleanest power for sensitive or critical equipment, at a higher cost.
Can we buy on account?
Yes. A trade account gives access to trade pricing, bulk discounts and credit of up to ÂŁ20,000, with a named account manager for repeat orders.
Equipping a whole team?
A dedicated account manager for every trade account.
