Where visor hoods earn their place
Cost and simplicity. In a one-bed flat, a studio or a portfolio where the hood needs to work, be cheap to replace and take up no visual space, a visor hood does exactly that. It fits under an existing wall unit without cabinetry work, and replacing one is a short job.
They extract less than a chimney hood of the same width and they look basic, so they are the wrong choice where the kitchen is part of the sell.
Remind tenants to pull the visor out
The visor is the capture area. Left pushed in, the hood extracts a fraction of what it should, and that is the single most common reason a visor hood gets reported as not working. It costs nothing to mention at handover or put on a kitchen card, and it saves the call-out.
Grease filters are usually washable and dishwasher safe — worth saying at the same time.

- Measure the wall unit it fits beneath
- Confirm the hood width matches the hob width
- Check the minimum mounting height above the hob
- Check the duct diameter, or whether it will run recirculating
- If recirculating, budget the carbon filters
- Mention the pull-out visor at handover

Many can run recirculating with a carbon filter, which then needs replacing periodically. Ducted is better wherever there is a route outside.
