Before you order an integrated hood

CheckWhy it matters
Wall unitMeasure internally: width, depth and height. A 60cm hood needs a 60cm cabinet.
Outlet positionCheck it against the duct route. Expect to lose the shelf above to ducting.
Hood widthMatch or exceed the hob. Going one size wider helps a recessed unit.
Duct diameterMatch the existing duct. A reducer costs performance and adds noise.
Filter checksFilters sit behind a door and get forgotten. Add them to the changeover list.

Ducted versus recirculating, extract rates for new-build sign-off and who replaces the filters in a let are covered on the main cooker hoods page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between integrated and canopy hoods?

They overlap. Integrated hoods are built into a cabinet, usually behind a door. Canopy hoods sit inside a chimney breast or canopy with the underside exposed.

Do integrated hoods extract as well as chimney hoods?

Like for like, a recessed unit captures a little less because it sits further back and behind a door. In a high-turnover let, a chimney hood tends to get used properly more often.

Are they harder to maintain?

Slightly. The filters are behind a door and easier to forget, so put filter checks on your changeover list.
