When an integrated hood is the right call
The argument for an integrated hood is visual: an unbroken run of units, with nothing hanging on the wall. In a new development or a high-specification refurbishment, that is often what the kitchen design is for.
The argument against is practical. Extraction happens behind a door, so capture depends on the door being opened or the unit pulling out, and the hood is harder to reach for cleaning. In a high-turnover rental where nobody explains the kitchen at handover, a chimney hood gets used properly more often.
Check the cabinet before you order
An integrated hood has to fit the wall unit it is going into — internal width, internal depth, and enough height above it to make the duct connection. A 60cm hood needs a 60cm cabinet, but cabinet internals vary, so measure rather than assume.
Where the cabinet is shallow, check the outlet position against where the duct enters, and remember the shelf above the hood will usually be lost to the ducting.

- Measure the wall unit internally — width, depth and height
- Check the outlet position against the duct route
- Confirm the hood width matches or exceeds the hob width
- Check the duct diameter, and avoid a reducer if you can
- Expect to lose the shelf above the hood to ducting

What is the difference between integrated and canopy hoods?▾
They overlap. Integrated hoods are built into a cabinet, usually behind a door. Canopy hoods sit inside a chimney breast or canopy with the underside exposed.
Do integrated hoods extract as well as chimney hoods?▾
Like for like on width and rate, a recessed unit captures a little less because it sits further back and behind a door. Going one width wider helps.
Are they harder to maintain?▾
Slightly. The filters are behind a door and less visible, so they are easier to forget. Put filter checks on your changeover list rather than relying on someone noticing.
